'Victory lap' today for record cyclist

A victory celebration is planned for today in Little Rock for a Sheridan man who recently beat the world record for most miles ridden on a bike in a year.

Kurt Searvogel rode 76,076 miles in 2015 -- an average of more than 200 miles per day. His feat was confirmed by the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association, and he is now recognized by Guinness World Records. The previous record was set in 1939.

A "victory lap" is planned for 2 p.m. today on the Little Rock side of the Arkansas River Trail, starting at Murray Park.

After a short lap -- which will have a casual pace -- attendees will have a picnic and social hour.

Today's celebration is sponsored by Arkansas Cycling and Fitness, Central Arkansas Velo, Michelob Ultra, DLT Events and the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

Architecture focus of Tuesday lecture

A lecture on architecture is set for Tuesday at the Arkansas Arts Center.

Neil Denari, the principal at Neil M. Denari Architects in Los Angeles, is booked to speak at 6 p.m., with a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. The center is at 501 E. 9th St. in Little Rock.

The talk is titled "Disagree to Agree."

"It's not unusual for parties to disagree when it comes to making decisions about matters architectural. Stands taken in response to deeply seated concerns about money or commitment to a specific direction and outcome sometimes lead to stalemates," a news release said. "Denari will talk about ways in which [his firm] deploys potentially disagreeable ideas into a welcoming context of agreement."

Denari is from Fort Worth and has degrees from the University of Houston and Harvard University.

More information on his lecture is available by emailing ardenetwork@icloud.com.
