Authorities in Arkansas say a man was shot in the leg after forcing a couple into their vehicle at gunpoint Friday afternoon.
Sgt. Anthony Murphy, a spokesman for Fayetteville police, said the man approached the couple at their residence on River Meadows Drive in Fayetteville.
Jerry Moore, 69, was working on his boat when the man demanded "big cash" and said they needed to go to the bank, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported after interviewing Moore's daughter, Alexis Cox, Saturday.
When Lou Moore, 65, opened the door to check on her husband, the robber forced both into the family's vehicle at gunpoint, Cox told the newspaper.
Inside, Moore retrieved his own gun, which he had put in the vehicle just two days before, Cox said.
When he turned off the safety, the robber reportedly heard the click and lunged. During the struggle that ensued, Cox said the robber bit her father and a gun went off, hitting the robber in the leg.
The robber got out of the vehicle on Huntsville Road, near White River Bridge, where emergency workers found him around 2:45 p.m., according to Central EMS Chief Becky Stewart.
As of Saturday morning, the man remained hospitalized with “serious” injuries. He was not being identified at that time.
Jerry Moore was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for bite marks, but has since been released, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.
The investigation is ongoing.
