Rison runs wild on Baptist Prep

Rison won its second consecutive game, defeating host Baptist Prep 55-0 Friday night in a game in which the home team struggled to compete.

Rison (2-0) had five players rush for gains of at least 10 or more yards, and junior running back and wide receiver Chris Lawson ran for touchdowns of 43 and 37 yards in his only two carries of the game.

"I was just picturing myself going to the end zone," Lawson said.

Rison backs rushed for 315 yards and averaged 9.3 yards per carry.

Baptist Prep (0-2) has been outscored 111-0 in two games totaled 38 yards on offense.

The Eagles could not stop tosses to the outside, and the plays were so effective that it set up a 37-yard touchdown pass off a play-action fake from senior quarterback Spencer Trail to Lawson.

"It set the whole thing up," Lawson said. "That's how it works."

Lawson started at running back in place of junior Malik Chavis, who missed the game with an ankle injury.

"He stepped up," said Rison Coach Clay Totty, whose team will host Lakeside next week.

The Wildcats had 269 yards rushing by halftime and led Baptist Prep 48-0 -- a score that would kick-start a running clock for the entire second half due to a 35-point sportsmanship rule.

Many of the same mistakes that plagued Baptist Prep in its opening loss to McGehee resurfaced against Rison.

Baptist Prep, which lost five fumbles against McGehee, lost five more to Rison, including a fumbled snap on the team's first drive of the game.

Two plays later, Rison's Lawson ran for a 43-yard touchdown on a toss to the left side of the field, which was devoid of defenders.

Rison scored touchdowns after each recovery of three Baptist Prep fumbles during the first half, and the Rison defense did fine on its own, holding the Eagles to minus-1 yard in the second half after Baptist Prep gained 39 in the first half.

Baptist Prep has not scored a point since the final game of last season, and second-year coach Morgan Cruce said they must "focus on the process" in order to stave off discouragement.

"We can't focus on opponents; we have to focus on ourselves," said Cruce, whose team will host Joe T. Robinson next week. "The mistakes we made, the missed tackles, those are things that we can fix together as a team. Then, once we do that, we can figure out what we're supposed to do schematically."

Friday's game was originally scheduled to be played at Rison, but the school was still installing artificial turf on its football field.
