Mildred Ann Pollan Hines

Mildred Ann Pollan Hines, of Stuttgart, Arkansas, died December 21, 2012, age 85, of natural causes. She was born February 22, 1927, in Itta Bena, Mississippi, the only child of Mildred (Tootie) and Governor Richard (Gov) Pollan. She graduated from Clarksdale, Mississippi, High School in 1945 and was a 64-year, active member of First Baptist Church, Stuttgart. She was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Senior Corps' RSVP and the Arkansas County Retired Teachers' Association. Ann was baptized at age 12 at Clarksdale Baptist Church to begin a life-long relationship with God. Married in 1949, Ann and her husband, John, moved from Clarksdale to Stuttgart so that John could work as a lumber grader (later manager) of Townsend Lumber Mill (acquired later by Potlatch Corporation.) Like many of "The Greatest Generation" families following WWII, Ann and John worked diligently to successfully raise their three baby-boomer sons. Ann was a full-time homemaker before beginning her professional career. For seventeen years until her retirement, she worked for Stuttgart Public Schools, primarily as secretary to Peggy Gingerich at Julia Shannon Elementary School. Ann was a devoted wife and mother, always placing others' needs before her own. Wife, mother, youth leader, Baptist, caretaker and friend, she continually gave of herself. In her retirement, she particularly valued her close-knit group of "Golden Girl" friends Mary Bisbee, Margaret Tackett and Deanna Shook, neighbor Betty G. Wilson, "pew-mate" Mary Humphrey and her many other friends at First Baptist Church of Stuttgart. Ann and her family greatly appreciate the care given to her over the past few years by Dr. Mervin Terrell and the staff at Trinity Village, Pine Bluff, most recently Dr. Noble Daniel and the staff at Crestpark Retirement Inn of Stuttgart, and Arkansas Hospice. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Hines, in 1992. Survivors include three sons: John Richard (Rick) Hines, H. Alan Hines, both of Stuttgart and David K. Hines of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five grandchildren: Sarah Hines Wilson and husband Mark of Maumelle, Ark., Laura Hines Bullock of Little Rock, Ark., John W. Hines of Del Rey Beach, Fla., Specialist David Hines, Jr. of Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, Olivia Hines of Fayetteville, Ark., two great-grandchildren: Logan and Riley Wilson; niece Ruth E. (Betsy) Hines Scroggs, her husband James, children Elizabeth (Liz) of Silver Spring, MD, and James (Ian) of Washington, D.C.; and scores of friends. Visitation will be on Saturday, December 22, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Turpin Funeral Home. Funeral service will be conducted by Dr. Sam Roberts at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 23, at First Baptist Church, followed by a brief family-only graveside service at Lone Tree Cemetery.
