The life of Goldie W. Smith will be celebrated in a graveside service 11 a.m., Friday, September 14, 2012 at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Hope, Ark. She will be interred next to her husband of 65 years, Herman W. Smith. The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, September 13 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home, 1001 South Main, in Hope. Mrs. Goldie Smith passed away Thursday, September 6, 2012 in her home for the past three years, Natchitoches, La. She was born September 8, 1922 in Lonoke County Arkansas to Dennis and Clara (Sowell) Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman W. Smith; siblings, Eddie Mae Smith, Oliver Dillon Smith, Gaylon Wesley Smith, and Marvin Vance Smith. Mrs. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Ark. She retired from teaching after positions in Washington, Ark. (third grade), and Hope, Ark. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Hope, serving as a Sunday School teacher and guest speaker for the Century Bible Class. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma education honor society and the Business and Professional Women's Club. Goldie enjoyed writing poetry, and published a volume of her works, as well as delighting friends and family with cards containing her verses. Her fondest memories included fishing with her beloved husband on Millwood Lake, as well as life as a military wife, including living in Japan and Germany with her family. Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Ronald W. Smith and his wife Susan of Benton, Ark. and Tony C. Smith and his wife Kathleen of Natchitoches, La.; granddaughter, Brooke Smith Casey and her husband Shawn of Fort Worth, Texas; great granddaughter, Clarissa Casey; sister-in-law, Lucille Smith of Fort Collins, Colo.; cousin Clyde Sowell of Centerville, Utah; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many close friends.
