Margaret D. Brown

Margaret D. Brown, 96, of Clarendon, Arkansas, went to be with her Lord on September 28, 2013. She recently resided at Ava Maria Assisted Living, Bartlett, Tennessee. Margaret was born near Higgins, Texas, on December 24, 1916, to Doris Parker and Lester Smith Dixon. She attended West Texas State Teachers' College graduating in 1940 with a degree in English. In later years she furthered her education at Texas Tech College, Lubbock, Texas, at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas; and at University of Central Arkansas, Conway, Arkansas. She taught in schools in the Texas Panhandle and in the Holly Grove and Clarendon public schools. During WWII she was employed by the United States Employment Services in Amarillo, Harlingen, and Pampa, Texas. While working for the U.S. Employment Service, she met and married William Louis Brown on December 30, 1943, in Amarillo, Texas. After the war ended, they returned to his home in Holly Grove, Arkansas where they lived for 10 years while he worked in the family lumber business. They moved to Clarendon in 1957 when Mr. Brown bought a lumber business there. Two children Barbara Kay and William Louis (Bill) Jr. were born to this union. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William Louis Brown; her daughter, Barbara Brown Wind; a sister, Carolyn Coker; and a brother, Parker Dixon. She is survived by her son, Bill Brown (Barbara), Arlington, Tennessee, three sisters, Ellinor Fowler (Jack), Plano, Texas, Kathleen Bridges, Dana Point, California and Dorothy Haile, Strattford, Texas. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Beverly Wind, Brooklyn, New York, Jeremy Wind, Webster, New York, Philip Cox, Lakeland, Tennessee, Angela Sammons, Cordova, Tennessee and 2 great granddaughters, Victoria Moore and Adrianna Sammons. In addition to being a homemaker and teacher, she taught Sunday school classes in Holly Grove and Clarendon Presbyterian churches. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Clarendon and was a member of Monroe County and Arkansas State Retired Teachers; the Grand Prairie Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Clarendon American Legion Auxiliary and was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Funeral services are by Fowler Funeral Home, Brinkley, Arkansas; Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral services at First Presbyterian Church in Clarendon. Interment is in Macedonia Cemetery, Holly Grove, Arkansas. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, Macedonia Cemetery, Holly Grove, Arkansas or to First Presbyterian Church, Clarendon, Arkansas.
