Jerry B. Prewit

JERRY B. PREWIT, a retired insurance agency owner died at age 81, Wednesday Sept. 23, 2015. Jerry was born May 8, 1934 in Stamford, Texas. He was the youngest of six children born to David E. and Ursula Sims Prewit. He graduated from Stamford High School and then went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in business. While at the University of Texas he was a member of the varsity track team. He was a member of the 440 yard relay team that broke a long-standing World Record. He also set numerous American and school records in both relay and sprint divisions. He was named Captain of the University track team his senior year. Upon graduation from the University of Texas, he joined the US Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Calif. He continued to run track for the US Navy while stationed in San Diego. He met his future wife, Mary Jane Spurgeon, a young school teacher originally from Indiana while stationed in San Diego. He and Mary Jane were married Aug. 3, 1958 in Frankfort, Ind. and remained married until her death in 2014. After they married, Jerry and Mary Jane moved to Birmingham, Ala. where their two children, Anne and Mark were born. After brief stints in Memphis and Nashville, Tenn., the family relocated to Little Rock, Ark., where they remained for the rest of his life. When he first arrived in Little Rock he worked as an agent for Connecticut General Life Insurance for several years until opening his own agency, Prewit & Associates. Mr. Prewit is survived by a son, Mark Prewit of Little Rock, a son, Wesley Prewit (Katie), two grandchildren Emily and Maddy Prewit all of Lonoke, Ark. He is also survived by his brother H.L. (Grover) Prewit (Doris) of Abilene, Texas as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Prewit, his, daughter Anne Prewit, his parents, David E. and Ursula Sims Prewit, his brothers, Gene Prewit, Lendall Prewit and Rex Prewit and sister, Francis Prewit Grissom. Mr. Prewit was an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church until his health made that no longer possible. He is a past President of Westside YMCA and was awarded for outstanding service to the organization. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015 at Grace Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. A burial will precede the memorial service at 10 a.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Park, Alexander, Ark.
