Edwin Whiteside

Dr. Edwin Whiteside, 84 of Fayetteville, Ark. passed away Sunday, October 23, 2016 in Fayetteville. He was born May 3, 1932 in Bentonville, Ark. to Tom Whiteside and Grayce(Broyles) Whiteside. He was a retired Allergist/Immunologist and a member of Central United Methodist Church after previously being a member of University Baptist Church for 40 years. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had a distinguished and varied career with the United States Air Force and with flying. He began the process as an aviation cadet but was redirected to medical school. He then came on active duty as a flight surgeon and finished the Air Force service, which he loved, in the Arkansas Air National Guard serving over 25 plus years. He developed a love of flying as a young boy and owned his own aircrafts using them to fly his friends across the country and for his own enjoyment including acrobatics. He finished his military career as State Flight Surgeon for the Arkansas Air Guard after serving for several years as Flight Surgeon for the 188th fighter group in Ft. Smith. He retired as a Colonel and will be buried with military honors. He has always been a person of incredible integrity. He was a true gentleman and always displayed genuine concern for others. He was forever complete in a strong commitment to his faith, his family, his friends, and to thousands of allergy patients. He was an extraordinary person and was loved by everyone who knew him. His family and friends knew that the most important part of his life was sharing the delight, joy, and excitement he found in his personal relationship with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole and son, Scott Whiteside. He is survived by one daughter, Susan Roberts and husband Gregg of Fort Smith, Ark., and three sons, Kirk Whiteside, Dr. Tom Whiteside and wife LaDawna, and David Whiteside all of Fayetteville, two sisters, Sue Nelson and Ann Haid both of Siloam Springs, Ark., seven grandchildren, Christen and Joshua Roberts, Christopher, Taylor, Alex, Madelynn, and Cruse Whiteside, and two great-grandchildren, Isaiah Roberts and Noah Whiteside. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 25th from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Nelson-Berna Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday October 26that Central United Methodist Church with Dr. H.D. McCarty officiating. Burial will Military Honors will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville. Memorial contributions may be made to Family Life in Little Rock.
