John R. Maddox, age 69, of North Richland Hills, Texas, and formerly of Malvern, wet home to be with our Lord on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016. He was born on September 16, 1946 in Denison, Texas to the late John and Sarah Maddox. He graduated high school in Camden, Ark., and received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Ouachita Baptist University, and did master's work at Henderson State University. John became the head percussionist of the Arkansas Symphony. While at Ouachita, he formed the John Maddox Jazz Trio. John married the former Beth Massey in Malvern on Aug. 10, 1968. His first career move was to have the honor of being hired as the Malvern Junior High School band director, and later the Malvern Senior High School band director. John and Beth moved to Texas in 1972, and he continued his love of music in service to the Lord through his percussion in several churches. For the past 27 years, John owned Advanced Surfacing Ind. in Dallas. He was a member of North Richland Hills Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Don Maddox. John is survived by his wife, Beth; by two daughters, Susan Rebecca Maddox and Sarah Elizabeth Holt (James); by a beautiful granddaughter, Alexandria Maria; and by a sister, Nancy Maddox Combs (Eddie), of Ark. John enjoyed the fellowship of many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his mentor and uncle, David C. Maddox, of California. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 20, 2016, in Oak Ridge Cemetery with Brother Eddie Combs officiating, and under the direction of J. A. Funk Funeral Home of Malvern. Memorials may take the form of contributions to the John and Beth Maddox Music Scholarship Fund at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark.
